Writing the SAT Essay

A recent addition to the SAT is a timed persuasive essay. Students are given 25 minutes to synthesize academic knowledge with personal experiences to develop an assigned topic with fresh ideas, coherence and logic, supportive details and specific examples, and a mastery of the English language. A six-point rubric is used by a cadre of Pearson’s trained on-line scorers to holistically evaluate each essay.

As a writing tutor, my services benefit students hovering between a 3/4 and a 4/5 on the SAT essay. I was trained by Pearson to score this essay, and I also have years of experience both developing and using rubrics to score essays, including the timed essay required by the GED exam. Of particular note is my tenure as an external examiner for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Advanced Placement English exam administered at Coral Gables High School in Miami, Florida. My own holistic scoring technique was evaluated by the IB administration in Geneva, Switzerland, to be 100% accurate and consistent.
